Just like the sun over the mountaintop
You know I'll always come again
You know I love to spend my mornings
Like sunlight dancing on your skin

    I've never gone so wrong
As for telling lies to you
What you see is what I’ve been
There is nothing I could hide from you
You see me better than I can

Out on the road that lies before me now
There are some turns where I will spin
I only hope that you can hold me now
Til I can gain control again

    And like a lighthouse
    You must stand alone
    Landmark a safe journey's end
    No matter what sea
    I've been sailing on
I'll always come back home again

Rod Crowell penned that one before he was 25, which is pretty impressive. Further showing his wisdom, he handed it to Emmylou.

    Probably an under appreciated songwriter.

I've cited the Seger lyric in qtlaw's original post several times in various threads around here.

I’m haunted every time I hear this, from Justin Townes Earle:

Well now who am I to say?
I've been trouble almost all my life
I took pleasure in such things most wouldn't entertain not at the darkest of times
So you take your pills and poison
    Drink yourself to death
Give yourself away until you ain't got nothing left
Because who am I to say that there's anything wrong with that

Mellencamp's finest work was "Rumble Seat."

Well I could have a nervous breakdown
But I don't believe in shrinks
I should be drunker than a monkey
But I don't like to drink
    Call up some girls
But I'm afraid of the phone
    I'm always talkin' to myself
    I guess I'm never alone
Am I the only one that feels this way?
I'd buy myself some stylish clothes
But I sure hate to pay

    and then...

    The sun is coming up
    Just goin' to bed
I combed my hair with my pillow
    Still got some dreams left
    Tomorrow is a new day
Gonna make these dreams come true
    I'm gonna believe in myself
I'll tell you what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna stop puttin' myself down
I'm gonna turn my life around

Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks, and I've learned much from both of their styles - Jimmy Buffett

As for Seger, every word of Roll Me Away is gold, but this is my favorite:

Stood alone on a mountain top
Starin' out at the Great Divide
I could go east, I could go west
It was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin'
And my soul began to rise

I always liked when the girl finally has enough and wants to go home. It’s a short lyric but he just leaves her without a fuss and goes on. Mostly in the sense that he gave her the freedom without stipulation. They had fun and he wanted to go on but didn’t force her.

    I really don’t appreciate
    The fact you’re sittin’ here
    Your voice sounds so wonderful
But your face don’t look too clear

I didn’t ponder the question too long
I was hungry and went out for a bite
Ran into a chum with a bottle of rum
And we wound up drinking all night

"Leaving Louisiana" is a great song. So is An American Dream, and On a Real Good Night. He's super.

    Day after day
    It reappears
    Night after night
    My heartbeat
    Shows the fear
    Ghosts appear
    And fade away
