I don’t even think those are the best lyrics from that song. Like Sam Stone and Long Black Veil (off the top of my head), the entire song is a masterwork. Kristofferson is another person who could have his own thread.

Somehow I forgot this one … written by a guy who used to post here ;)

    “I can’t forget the sound, because it’s here to stay;
The sound of people chasing money, and money (pause) getting away.
    A long way from happiness,
In a three hour away town,
    Whiskey bottle over Jesus,
    Not forever, just for now,
    Not forever, just, for now.

Many of us have been slacking in not mentioning the five greatest words from the anthem of our generation:

    Oh well. Whatever. Never mind.

Probably because, for the longest time, everyone thought it was "Wemmmhpppphhhnnngghhhhmmmmm."

I've used this before. I'm sure I'll use it again ....

Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
    Or is it something worse

Down a dangerous road, I have come to where I'm standing
With a heavy heart, and my hat clutched in my hand
Such a foolish fool, God ain't known no greater sinner
I have come in search of Jesus, hoping he will understand

From one of the greatest story songs in rock history:

    I was cutting a rug
Down at place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lou
    When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who

I can't listen to the Conway Twitty song "That's My Job."
If you know the song and have lost your father, you probably know what I mean.
Even posting about it makes me misty eyed.

Passtime (aka The Jug) is an orange cinder block building in Jacksonville. Painted on the door: domestic cans $1 from 6-9 a.m. When I got there at 7:30, there were already six to eight people at the bar. Redneck church.

Ronnie Van Zant is an underrated songwriter, I think. “Free Bird” is not at all a great song lyrically, but if you dig into the catalog, you’ll find songs about …

    gun control (“Saturday Night Special”):
    Handguns are made for killin’
They ain’t no good for nothin’ else
And if you like to drink your whiskey
    You might even shoot yourself
So why don’t we dump ‘em, people,
To the bottom of the sea
Before some ol’ fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

environmental protection (“All I Can Do is Write About It”):
I like to feel the autumn breezes blowin’
I like to see an youngun with his dog
Did you ever stop to think about, well, the air you’re breathing
Well, you better listen to my song

and even feminism — OK, that’s a little bit of a stretch, but only a little (“On the Hunt”):
I know who are you are,
I know what they call you, girl
    Never put you down, baby
    I’m just like you
    Baby, I’m on the hunt

Van Zant was absolutely a redneck, but there’s no way he would ever have gone down any MAGA road.
