The Democratic Party is to be forgiven for not following the election advice of the terminally terrified.

Look at it another way. It is spring 2027 and Joe Biden is still alive and the President, with Kamala Harris still VPOTUS. Do you think her declaration for the 2028 nomination clears the Democratic field?

Maybe and maybe not. But unless the administration has hit some as yet unknowable political pitfall, new war, new recession, etc., she would be in the strongest position of any other possible candidate. VP Hubert Humphrey got the nomination of a Democratic party in splinters over the most divisive issues possible, race and the Vietnam War. Rejecting the VP of n incumbent President is rejecting in effect the President and his administration. That's very hard for a party's primary voters to do.

Depends what's gone down in the intervening three years.

If the MAGGATS can be jackbooted down to the point they can't block every fucking thing Biden and the Dems try to do, I suspect Kamala will be pushed forward into a role of greater visibility/effectiveness to improve her standing for 28.

Remember HHH would likely have won in 68 except for Nixon's treason charade.

Probably not. Short of the president dying, I don't think the VP is fait accompli as the nominee. It would be a throw down between Harris and Newsom. Bush I and Gore both had token challengers.

Which means he’ll be 65 in ‘28, in other words, retirement age for anything other than elected federal officials.

Hope nothing terrible happens, but from the CNN feed as of now (nearing 2 p.m.), it appears to be just a smattering of "protesters"/Trumpers on site.

I think there will be a token candidate that runs against her, like in every primary. Otherwise, I think she and/or Biden would have had to do something that made them deeply, deeply unpopular to not be the automatic nominee. Like, short of Watergate, but worse than "no new taxes."

And he could, good health and enough of the electoral college map permitting, exit after two terms and still be considerably younger than Biden was when he began his presidency and younger than orange guy was in 2020.

AOC will be 38 in 2028. Just saying ...
