    I can't wait until I'm asked why I'm leaving.

"Because retirement pays me better than you do."

Yep. That is the governing calculus. My layoff was better for my bottom line than my job was.

To be fair, pretty much anything is better for someone's bottom line than being a newspaper man.

One thing that surprised me on these lists: Oregon 46th in quality of education? How does that happen?

A good chunk of Oregon is more Alabama than Alabama.

    Driftwood-

I think newspapers will come back someday, but that's neither hither nor thither.

    Maybe not in our lifetimes.

The whole industry needs a factory reset.

The reason that I have given Garland much slack, and continue to, is this: If you are going to be the first to prosecute a former President, you had damn well better get it right. It has taken time, but the documents case that Smith has indicted is about as ironclad as it can be. That won't stop the judge from playing games, or prevent some MAGA on the jury from sticking his fingers in his ears and voting not guilty no matter the facts, but the facts as stated are damning.

I can't wait till the 1/6 indictment comes down with Mark Meadows as a cooperating witness, because Trump is going to get absolutely nailed there, too.

I hope you are correct, but when they do, you can guarantee that the grunts in the newsroom will still be poorly paid while the publisher/owners cry poor.

I can't think of many industries that don't feature that dynamic. Even if they don't, eventually they will. See Google, Facebook, and other Tech industries.

There are two reasons why we've never prosecuted a former president.

    A. Most of them just live quiet lives, writing books, building museums, even houses. Not a bad gig.

ii. The only other one who would --- absolutely would --- have been prosecuted was preemptively pardoned.

    And also:

    3. A lot of the early presidents died just a few years after their term(s) end, so they didn’t have much time to do anything that could be considered criminal.
