Sorry to hear that. It’s sounded recently tho that you saw this train coming down the tracks.
Maybe you can move into PR like so many folks with your skills and local fame?

    Is that correct?

How could you charge more for ads than a station with larger viewership?

Perhaps my message got muddled. In my previous place, I was at the #1 station. 41 share at 6 pm. Charged $400 for a :30 ad. The last place was a 4 share and charged $70-75.

However, we each had our own client base. The dealerships, hospitals, sportsbooks and lawyers bought on all stations but the lower-rated station had more clients because of price point.

I might. I detest meetings, however. Trying to avoid a grown-up job.

This weekend and week, I’m just building a roster of contacts across 7 different paths I think I could take. Some fun/lower paying, some I have extreme interest in, some I would do just to pay the bills.

List building reminds me of when I was selling my novels. I built a list of every library director in each state or city I had a scene of the book in. Sold hundreds of novels to libraries at full price — without Amazon taking 55%.

Today’s research was fun. Sportsbook talent acquisition specialists. Names and contacts. Applied for a few jobs. Made connections with a few people.

Mostly, I’m being transparent and saying “here is my situation. I have (these) skills. Where would you start to focus on if you were me?”

For the newspaper writers here, the kindness I’ve already been shown from people I’ve DM’d on Twitter has been truly heartwarming. You’ve been through it before and the help and contacts I’ve received really are making it better.

First, best of luck with the next big thing. Transitions like this suck.

Second, love the approach above and asking for how to start or focus from those you're talking with. Great idea.

Best to you @exmediahack. Sounds like you are prepared and have a great plan.

As for all the folks at ESPN, both this highly visible round and the other recent layoffs, nothing I can say other than it's awful. And hopefully everyone will land on their feet.

Good luck, @exmediahack . Been there before, a long time ago, and didn't enjoy it much. That ten months should be a big help.

It's really complicated. I'm in a five station market. Several years ago the Gannett station bought the Belo station, which would have been OK except that the Gannett station also owned the newspaper. The Gannett station then sold the Belo station to Meredith, who later sold both stations to Gray.

There's some formula involving how big a percentage of the market you can own but it never made any sense to me.
