What is any of us doing to fix it? Anybody voting “Yes” on those school-tax increases to pay teachers the $100k a year minimum they actually deserve (I’m serious about that, by the way)? Probably not.

We can’t “fix” it. The only thing we can do is not make it worse, and the best way to do that is to pay fucking attention in meaningless off-year local elections so that fewer whack jobs get elected to school boards.

 

There is so much wrong with your approach to this. Generalizing a take on public schools is the start of your problem. We don't have one system. We have 50 of them. Lumping them all together is stupid.

There is a lot wrong with saying most schools have enough money. For one thing, it is vague and subjective. What is enough? There are far too many schools in this country that don't have the resources to serve their students properly. We don't make education nearly enough of a priority in this country. Instead, we turn it into a political football, and this is a problem on both sides. You have politicians pushing change in one direction only to lose or have their time in office end, so the next person jerks things in an entirely knew direction. This creates a stupid tug-of-war with students and educators stuck in the middle.

Take Common Core as an example. It was a good idea, but it was poorly and inconsistently implemented, then discarded in some places, creating yet another mess. President Obama and the Democrats pushing it mucked things up, but part of that was knowing that it could end up being thrown out the window when his second term was over.
