Still strikes me funny how wrong the dopes were and remain about Carter.

 

A different historian Kevin (Mattson) wrote a strong and sympathetic book about the speech a few years ago.

Who cares? Is there some alternative history in which Carter won in 1980 and people don't view him as ineffectual?

 

The New Deal coalition founded by FDR was falling apart and Carter wasn't the man to stop that. I don't think FDR could've. The inflation of the 70s and the oil shocks were outside events of such magnitude any President would've found them hard to handle. The failed hostage rescue attempt cemented Carter's rep for ineffectiveness, but as we've seen in the subsequent 40 years, the Islamic world's political problems are not readily solved by US military action. Presidents get blamed for everything and that's part of the deal they ought to know going in, but Carter faced a real series of tough hands while holding weak cards.

 

The difference is JFK Jr. went down off Gay Head and RFK Jr. is going down on Toadstool Head.
