The 2023 Running Baseball Thread

Angels 13, Astros 12 in 10. Craziness. Winning run comes in on a throwing error on a routine double play by the backup shortstop who just came into the game after sitting around for 4 hours. Angels had a six-run comeback in the seventh and a three-run comeback in the ninth.

 

If ever there was a "won in spite of themselves" game, this was it for the Angels.

BTW, the shortstop who made the game-losing error on what should have been an inning-ending double play was Grae Kessinger, grandson of former Cub and White Sock Don Kessinger. The thing I always remember about the elder Kessinger is that, before Pete Rose was traded back to the Reds in '84, he was the last MLB player-manager, doing it with the White Sox in the late '70s. When Kessinger decided to relinquish his managerial duties, the Sox replaced him with this thirtysomething coach who had a lackluster MLB career and earned a law degree afterward; guy's name was Tony La Russa.

 

The Orioles tried very very hard to shit away a 5-0 lead against the Marlins in the top of the 9th but thankfully failed. Eight in a row, one game out of first in the AL East. Dodgers coming to town for three. This team is so fucking fun.

 

Just finished the Paul Richards bio. Reputedly one of the most brilliant baseball minds ever. He was the ChiSox GM or something when La Russa managed in their farm system and was a base coach. He was very high on La Russa, who was smart enough to spend a lot of postgame time listening to stories and talking strategy with Veeck and Richards and the other old farts in the organization, and he learned.

 

After going 4-for-5 Saturday to push his BA back up to .386, Luiz Arraez takes the 0-for-5 to drop back to .380. He's been slipping steadily since the beginning of July, with lots of 0-fers and 1-fers, which just won't cut it.

It's frickin' hard to hit .400. Ted Williams' head is proof.

 

Eight straight for the O's. Jackson Holliday hitting .500 in his first three AA games.

 

Angels doing their part to put a brief hold on the Ohtani-to-the-Bronx talk. Emphasis on brief. Won't take much for ESPN -- or MLB Advanced Media -- to resume their prayers.
