now do the racist Simpsons caricature that has long been given a pass because its 'humor' has been crafted by well-schooled liberals

    Disagree.

I think it's possible to navigate most of it with some empathy and common sense.

    the redonkulous Apu character

Somebody in 1995 thought that was a good idea, but then again it was Fox.

I’d really like to know how often people here get criticized for offending someone. In real life, not in cartoon Internet world.

I largely agree with this. You can’t always know what will upset someone.

But you can do your best and know you’re not going to be prefect all the time
You can listen when someone says what you said was offensive.
You can admit you messed up.
You can try to do better next time.

Simple one: telling a kid you’re going to call her mom.
Nothing offensive about any of that.
Girl says her mom is dead she’s being raised by her sister.
You didn’t mean anything. But you opened something up for her.
Apologize, make the correction and remember the girl’s parents are dead and be better.

You don’t start a class discussion about what has happened to today’s family and when saying mom became offensive.

identify your blind spots, everybody's got them. It's the only way through this quagmire.

and u are going to have a few if you grew up in 99%-white Catholic schools with dudes named Duncan and the like.

I find the rest of it pretty comfortably covered under the heading "treat people as you would want to be treated."

I work with middle schoolers. The answer is quite often.

As for adults, every now and then. More than never. Less than constantly.
