Pets teach kids mortality, which is a fact of living that I hate.

It can also teach them to be kind to the defenseless. Which is a wonderful thing.

My current dog is the first non-beagle I’ve had in my adult life. I love them. I think breeding and hunting issues are what lead to the abuse, especially since beagles are great hunters only until they hit age 3 or so, and then they often get abandoned as their senses dull. At least, that’s how it was explained to me when I rescued the dog in the picture and her brother.

And, they had basically been left to rot in the shelter because they were older. But I fell in love with them right away and at least gave them some good years at the end. She died within a year, but her co-dependent brother lived another three after that, and even got to “adopt” my son when he was a baby.

Is the new dog getting the boot or the rug? Unclear to me. And where do you go to get a dead dog ruggified?

I think the rug is getting sold. But I agree it’s confusing.

And that’s some fucked up taxidermy.

If you want a bear rug, get a bear rug.

If you want to stuff your deceased pet, stuff the whole thing. Don’t go half head, half rug.

Roy Rogers had his horse Trigger stuffed and mounted. Dale Evans preferred the process in reverse (old SNL joke).

But yeah, can you imagine walking on your dog. And stumbling over the head. Bad form.

Telling kids the dog was too sick, he needed to go live with a vet. Then adding to the story the vet was cross country, a train ride away. Then adding the dog was too sick, he died, but well taken care of and in the vet’s arms. Kids were 5 and 3. Good or not?
    I think excellent.

    Sounds fine to me.

Thank goodness I haven’t had to do that yet. My last beagle died when my son was a year and a half old.

It’s going to be rough when our current dog goes. He’s the one they will have grown up with their entire lives. We got him when they were 5 and 2, and he’ll likely make it until at least one of them leaves for college.
