Runner was already on first base when Fujinami came in to replace Rodriguez. Gave up a walk to put Yankees on first and second base, then induced a quick double-play grounder.

Their closer tore up his knee before the season. Of all teams, they should know how easily replaced a closer is.

Santander had a sublime game, laying out in right to save a run and following by guessing right on yet another Tommy Kahnle changeup.

I feel like he's somebody who has flown under the national radar because he came up when the O's were still a laughingstock.

He was the guy in the Orioles lineup that was unstoppable when Baltimore had seven games with the Tigers back in the spring. Now Baltimore has everybody playing well.

And I'm totally envious of fans of the Orioles and Reds who are seeing the fruits of great drafts coming into the major leagues and making an immediate impact. To see the future of your franchise start to take shape is truly the most fun time.

I remember 1978 when Whitaker, Trammell, Gibson, Parrish, Morris and Rozema began to recreate a winning atmosphere in Detroit. Even though they only won the one world's championship, it was a glorious time for optimism.

With the exception of Verlander and a few offensive pieces (Inge, Monroe, Granderson), the 2006-2015 Tigers were basically mercenaries hired by Dombrowski to cover the lack of any farm system depth. They weren't a collection of guys who came up through the ranks and formed a cohesive group of young talent. They were Ilitch's baseball version of the Wagner Group. And about as successful.

Maybe Scott Harris will get Tiger fans there again. But right now, it's budding star Riley Greene, a head-scratching enigma in Spencer Torkelson, half an outfield platoon in Matt Vierling, future DH Kerry Carpenter and the flaming pile of dog turds Al Avila left as a going-away present in Javier Baez. There is some help down in Toledo but no can't miss guys to fill in 2B, 3B, LF and RF. Detroit may be years away from getting to the point where Baltimore or Cincinnati are now.

The majority of Orioles fans just don't want the young nucleus -- including Jackson Holliday -- to be broken up for a rent-a-pitcher.

You can't cheat Father Time, although Scherzer and Verlander have put up a good fight.
