His 2018 win was very narrow - 49.6% to 49.2%. The D candidate was Andrew Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, who had some ethics/corruption issues swirling around late in the campaign that hurt him in the end. Without that, he likely would have won. I think if Gwen Graham had won the primary, she would have been elected governor. Being a former representative and the daughter of Bob Graham, former gov and senator bought her name recognition and goodwill. She got hurt in the primary by two other guys running who split up the vote, and Gillum giving off an isn’t he exciting , the next Obama vibe that was very appealing at the time. I can’t remember who I voted for in the primary but I remember talking to friends in Tallahassee who had better insight into FL politics about it in the months before the primary. No need to get into how he crashed and burned later. Anyway, I think if those other two guys had stayed out of the race, or at least one of them, Gwen would have been the D candidate and she would have won.

In the last election, the Ds had a shitty candidate who ran a shitty campaign. They didn’t have any other decent candidate to run, although I think Val Demings would have had a shot at winning had she run for Gov rather than senator. She ran a shitty campaign, too, btw, which drove me nuts because I liked her as a D candidate for just about anything.

The Ds in FL need better candidates.

Serious question Ive been pondering after seeing Mitch McConnell, 80, freeze for 20 seconds on camera, which “even” prompted Trump to say he should step aside as minority leader:

What if something similar happened to Biden and Trump between now and next summer? If the slate was cleared of old blood, who would emerge as the standard bearers? Would it simply be next up poll-wise or seat-wise, and thus DeSantis and Harris?

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/27/farm-bill-house-gop-wic-children/

A year ago, when the Supreme Court struck down the federal right to abortion access, Republican politicians pledged to support women facing unplanned pregnancies.

Today? Republican lawmakers are literally trying to take food away from disadvantaged new moms and their children.

They’re doing so via the annual House appropriations agricultural bill, specifically the GOP-written House version that was slated for a vote this week. This legislation covers a lot of ground, including rural development grants and loans for farmers. But among its most critical, least appreciated, highest return-on-investment programs is one known as WIC (officially, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children).

We had food stamps and were on WIC at times when I was a kid. We wouldn't have made it without them. Fuck them Republicans.
