What would really be fascinating is figuring out who Harris would tap to be her vp if she were elevated at some point. Likely someone more established who would be expected to attract all those moderate voters the Ds lust after, from a swing state, though not a Senator because you want to hold that majority. And obviously not another woman.

Newsom runs into the Harris home state problem here, similar to DeSantis vis-a-vis Cult 45.

The future theoretical Harris veep won't be a Senator, lest it be from a completely safe state with a Dem governor. But that won't be the reach, as the Dems will be wanting to pull purple votes to gain an edge.

Very few House reps are vice-presidential timber (yet), but could be a mid-term state governor.

Outside of Bush, who didn't take office because his predecessor died?

Nixon, on his second try. But it's worth remembering the VPs who did become President, starting with Teddy Roosevelt, went on to win usually by decisive margins. Coolidge, Truman and LBJ.

Only six have successfully run without a president dying first. Nixon before Bush. Biden did it and then you have to do back to Van Buren.
