In 2023, I still say any country has more to lose than to gain by trying a land grab invasion. The world is ruled by commerce.
Everyone stands to make more by working together than killing one another.

This reminds me of how things are in New Mexico, where I lived for several years...there, the descendents of the "founding families" (Lujans, Bacas, Chavez, Vigil and others I forget) would consider themselves a grade above the rest of the Hispanic population "because, our forefathers came from Spain, don't ya know!"

We were both also in the Navy and share the same birthday (albeit his about 140 years before mine).

Ha! Cool fact when you're conversing with Sea Power nerds!

Its amazing to me how prescient Mahan was, writing in the time of coaling stations and stevedores. Should be required reading for anyone who seeks to serve in positions which influence foreign policy (I'm looking hard at you, "Bring the troops home!/No bases overseas!" libertarians.)

The funny thing is, Mahan actively tried to avoid command at sea because he wasn't good at it. Ships under his command had multiple collisions.

Got to love a professional officer who understands his limitations.

Did not know that. I've read his works, but I've not read an actual Mahan biography.

He sounds like one of those Great Football coaches, who was a mediocre football player.

I think he was fine at sea service, just not sea command (at least the ship handling part of it).

FWIW, Dreadnaught, in which Mahan plays a major role, is my favorite historical book, hands down.

Adding to my reading list. Thanks for the recommendation.

That is true all over Latin America, Latins who have a European ancestor think they are superior to those who don't. Evo Morales and Hugo Chavez were both dark skinned. Their political bases came from being the champions of dark skinned who generally had much lower standards of living.
