It is. Except for the politics.

But I'll be damned if I'm going to let some MAGA chuds run me out of my beloved Ozarks.

I tell students day one that if they go by something other than what's on the official roster, tell me then. Whatever you say is what you're going to be called.
The only caveat to that is graduation. It doesn't matter what they want to be called; we announce their full legal name when they walk across the stage.

The Sound of Freedom was about stopping this guy, right?

It is amazing what adding a simple "Preferred Name" field on an enrollment form, and then importing that into everything else - like the enrollment management software - can do to make this easy for the kids. I understand it can be difficult to get the systems set up to work with each other, but once you do the teacher is there on Day 1 and can see that name on the roster next to their legal name. It should be smooth sailing from there. Thankfully our school has done that work, but I see it with all the different camps, sports and other activity enrollments we do for him. Some make it easy and others make it difficult.

We do the same for the Ricks instead of Richards.

At promotion, we have the kids write the name they want announced. All of them take that seriously and usually we get full legal names.

Why can't MAGAs diagram football plays?

My son doesn’t go by a nickname, but he intentionally misspells his name because he likes it better that way. None of the teachers give a shit.

Also, there are a shit-ton of Richards in my family and I’ve called them all “Dick” at least once just to bust balls. Of all the nicknames there are, that’s the one I understand the least. Why anyone would prefer to be called that is beyond me.

A little OT, but my dad was raised deep in the backwoods of the UP. After he got out of high school in 1940 he followed his brother to Detroit for factory work. The trip took two days, in no small part because they had to cross the strait by ferry. After the war they gave up on Detroit -- Dad went to Chicago and my uncle to Milwaukee.

I know a guy who was Dick until he was in his 70s, then decided he was going to be Richard.

    That's a tough time for a transition.
