    That's all true, but to significantly compound the problem is that young adult and middle-age West Virginians are choosing to leave at a decent clip, too. I used to have quite a few relatives in W.Va., but with one exception, my cousins under 50 have all moved to Virginia or Maryland and taken their kids with them. The one who stayed, turns 50 this year. He has no children.

    Mostly they left for jobs, but for one family the regressive political/culture wars stuff of the last 10 years was also a big factor.

    WVU doesn't have Robert Byrd bringing home the pork and getting the Feds to pay for many of its construction projects anymore, like the light rail connecting parts of campus.
