    I never did.
I see "based on a true story" and I think "almost complete fabrication".

And I still ought to be rebuked for not having read the original story before posting that. I know better, and I denounce myself.

I'll never get cast in a remake of "The Client" at this rate.

So that fits, the most "ignorant" guy is the one who gets taken by the smooth talking, well to do guy. Thanks for making Mr. Oher's case.

I've seen it once or twice, but I wasn't really paying close attention. I remember being kinda surprised Saban appeared in it, because it didn't really make him look that great.

(I might be misremembering here but I seen to remember the movie was largely produced while Saban was in the NFL )

And I remember thinking that even if you took it in the most positive, benevolent light possible, that it was one of the more glaring examples of white savior syndrome that I'd ever seen. So there was that too.

How did it take him that long to realize he wasn’t adopted?

Has he run out of money seven years after retirement and is now looking to get whatever he can?

    The timing seems very strange.

I interviewed Oher for an article for the WWL back in 2011 when his memoir came out. It was co-written by Don Yaeger of SI, who also apparently didn’t bother to check to see if Oher was adopted. I’m sorry, the whole timing of this seems off.

It is likely a case of Oher now being far enough removed from his playing days that he's finally taking a look at his bank account and saying, "Wait, I should have more than what's in there."

Sometimes when people are suddenly making lots of money, they no longer keep track of the exact amount. Money management is a huge issue with athletes, as we all know.

Oher likely assumed everything was under control because he had people he trusted helping him. But there was likely some catalyst recently that caused him to take a closer look himself rather than trust others.

He recently got married to his longtime girlfriend. It's entirely possible that, as many married couples do, they began to jointly operate their finances and that's where discrepancies popped up.

People discover they've been the victims of long-running fraud nearly every day.

It's certainly plausible that a teenager with a lot of street smarts but little sophistication would sign legal documents without understanding their full meaning.

How many times have we heard of a recording artist who signed a horrifically bad contract in their late teens/early 20s? Anyone remember Prince and his refusal to use a pronounceable name as protest? How many times have we heard of a child actor being taken advantage of by their family?

This is really rather simple. The Touheys and Oher represented to the public over, and over, and over that he had been "adopted." Either adoption papers exist or they don't. Similarly, either conservatorship papers exist or they don't. One backs up their story. The other raises massive questions about the truth and the Touheys motivations.

Also, add me to the list of people who never saw the movie. The publicity around it alone was enough to turn me off. Peak white saviorship.
