This guy? He was an outfielder. I don't remember him ever coming in to pitch (but he probably would have got shelled)

I had, like, 87 of those Kevin Bass cards.

It was like he was included in every pack.

They’re now likely guarding my parents’ basement in a Converse box in Ohio.

Just make sure they're not next to Mike Scott cards, or they could end up scuffed.

I’m not against that at all. In fact, I would argue that that’s what college should be for.

but that’s not what really college is. College has become a place where budding doctors have to take this broad range of classes taught at the 100 level by TAs paid less than a fry cook so as to present the veneer of broad education - and justify the existence of said departments.

I would agree that bedside manner has gotten worse. I would argue that bedside manner needs to be taught. In a doctor school. Not subcontracted out to the 202 art of short story class.

    That's already underway.

    Teaching Empathy in Medical Education

And you can do it in part by making them read.

I'd have them start with Philoctetes, by Sophocles.

But there are plenty of good short stories, too.

    Tolstoy's 'Three Questions' is one.

And most of Chekov's short stories are good on the matter of empathy, since he was a doctor.

(Parable of the Good Samaritan is pretty short as well.)
