Dominic Thiem resurfaces in the U.S. Open, rolling over 25th-seeded Alexander Bublik in straight sets in a first-round match.

Just three years ago, he won this thing (albeit with help from a Djokovic DQ), but this is the first match he's won in a major tournament since the 2021 Australian, as he's battled injuries.

Shocker in the first round: Fourth seed Holger Rune ousted by 63rd-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain in four sets.

Not quite as shocking: Women's No. 8 Maria Sakkari taken out by another Spaniard, No. 71 Rebeka Masarova, 6-4, 6-4.

Wasn't Rune bitching about being on one of the "bad" courts?

How nice of ESPN to superimpose an equal-pay logo on our televisions that's not actually there on court.

If you're not watching the Gauff-Siegemund match on ESPN, turn it on. Siegemund is giving a tennis clinic and is up a set on Coco.

    This is a master class.

They do that on lots of things. Behind the batter-catcher-umpire at the LLWS. The "YouTube TV" on the court for the NBA Finals.

My kids have had fish which have had shorter lifespans than the first game of this set.

Great power, great all-court action in this match. I'm guessing that Siegemund, like Gauff, plays a lot of doubles.
