You and your damn details, always ruining practically perfect posturing*.

True. Watch Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President.

The thing about Daniels going from Long Haired Country Boy and Uneasy Rider to whatever he became is the odd thing.

Waaaayyy too late in the game. 15 months before the election.

Meaning Carter's term got all of the immediate bad effects, and Reagan got all the credit for the eventual good effects.

I’m just describing his instincts, not whether he was effective at harnessing them.

Add that he came to town with his Georgia Mafia friend circle, who immediately started talking about how they were going to "fix things" and pissed off the D. C. establishment. Led to a lack of help and cooperation later when Carter needed it.

I suspect that Nugent and Daniels both made a lot of money. Money changes everything. Back in the day, Republican was the party of keeping your money.

A similar thing happened with LBJ. Dick Russell abided some of Johnson’s cozying up to liberal positions/senators like Humphrey expressly because LBJ was marked as the south’s one great presidential hope.

Even Clinton won Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee twice and Florida and Georgia once each. But by 2000 the sign of the donkey might as well have been a pentagram to white Southerners and that fever still hasn’t broken.
