Why is the Mountain West a stupid name?

The Pac 12 name is associated with fail, and sounds so wanna-be. Like Arte Moreno changing the name to Los Angeles Angels while never leaving Anaheim. It's a terrible idea.

I feel bad for the Pac-12 commissioner. Larry Scott royally screwed things up, but then George K kept holding out for a better media deal… and he ended up fucking himself over.

Commissioners are only as good as the school presidents - and the Pac-12 presidents were idiots. Every step of the way. It's like they were kids just waiting for money to fall out of the sky instead of going after it like other conferences did.
This all still doesn't feel permanent though - kind of like the BCS, or the four-team playoff - CFB always has to do something stupid before they get things right.

Larry Scott gets the lead graf of the death of the Pac-12 as he lunges in a Las Vegas hot tub.

USC/Carol Folt and UCLA are included with Fox and ESPN for administering the lethal injection (as George K. was vacationing in Montana at the time). The fallout a year-plus later was as predictable as a sunrise.

If anything ESPN wanted the conference to stay together (admittedly on its terms: cheap content).

I've asked this elsewhere, but besides being a tool, what precisely did Scott do/not do that killed the Pac-12? Not bring in Texas and Oklahoma? Too long of a deal? Allow the networks to stash half their games in the late window, thereby driving down their viewership and justifying the networks for lowballing the next TV contract? All of the above?

But really, you had 12 school presidents, TWELVE (actually more than that because of the churn in the last five years) and none of them rang the alarm bells. I do think about 70 percent of this was locked in two or three years ago - USC and UCLA bailing (unless they received a bigger slice of the pie), the networks and other conferences sizing up the rest of the conference to absorb etc. You might even say the ASU prez tanked the ESPN negotiation by saying the rights are worth $50m a year per team.
