West Virginians deserve a real university. The very idea of the common good has been lost in the discussions about WVU’s catastrophic cuts; the significance of a public university has been forgotten. But just what is a public university? A public university is neither the buildings on a campus nor the endowment nor its figureheads. The public university is quite simply its people: students, past, present, and future; staff who support the mission; workers who provide services; and us, the faculty. A public university is owned by the people of that state. Employees of a public university—like us—are public employees. We do not work for the president or provost of WVU. We do not even work for the Board of Governors. We work for the people of West Virginia.

It's coming for a lot of state universities. Not all of them - but a lot.

Public universities have burned through a lot of money. They've hired a lot of administrators who make a lot of money but make minor impact. They've built a lot of fancy dorms. They've prioritized out-of-state students in many cases. And many have allowed - and I say this as someone who loves the English department - a handful of humanities diehards to overshadow the often crucial work public universities do in so many industries, including extension offices throughout a state.

Some major public universities have simply lost the plot. I don't like the budget cuts. But university faculties should, instead making moral appeals, tend to running the best university possible.

 

Focus on what you do best - I know most universities like to offer "everything," but focus on the areas you can have the greatest impact. If you really want to serve your state, focus on fields of study the state needs. With research that will benefit your population. By all means have basic departments to give undergrads the basics in liberal arts, but maybe ease back on French Literature, art history, and the like. Of course, when a third or more of your student body will be heading out of state when they are done - don't expect the state population to have deep ties to the university - unless the football or basketball teams are good.

 

That's an important point, that we are so far as a nation from where we were in the wake of those attacks. I'm not even sure we could stand together like that again if we had to do it now.
