    Correct. It is complicated because of the multiple wild cards and the remaining head-to-head games between those candidates.
    Yesterday was the first day that MLB provided guidance about which other games were relevant and which results therein would drop the magic number.

    Exactly. Here’s a previous case:

    “Mariner relief pitcher Josias Manzanillo was resting in a hospital today after undergoing testicular surgery.

    Manzanillo was injured Tuesday night when hit by a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Manny Ramirez.

    A Mariner physician, Dr. Mitch Storey, yesterday said he suspected Manzanillo's right testicle was ruptured. Storey said Manzanillo was not wearing a protective cup at the time of the injury.

    The M's placed Manzanillo, a right-hander, on the 15-day disabled list and called up left-hander Tim Davis from Class AAA Tacoma.

    Manzanillo was one of Seattle's best relief pitchers in the first week of the season, yielding one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.”

    (From April 1997.)

    I believe Lars Nootbar of the Cardinals went on the IL about a month ago after fouling one off or very close to the same spot.

    High school kids will laugh at anything but our baseball team was nearly on the floor of the dugout giggling when, after a prolonged rain delay, the home plate umpire loudly announced, "THE BATTER HAS TWO BALLS ON HIM!"

    Here’s a pretty good article about Manzanillo:

    The mere thought of this might have led to shrinkage.

    All Rangers pitchers are unlikely to pitch in the playoffs:

    The Wander Franco story is disappearing from public view for two reasons:
    1) The investigation is taking place in another country;
    2) The Rays, as is their custom, keep winning.

    That organization is amazing. Every year, they lose multiple pitchers to season-ending injuries. Every November, they lose free agents. And none of it matters. They always re-stock, and they do it without benefit of high draft picks.

    Funny would be Verlander and Scherzer standing between Miggy and saying that
