As re: the life expectancy gap stuff, I think there's a more prosaic tale underpinning that drift ... Women live a good bit longer than men, and over that timeframe women began to substantially outnumber men with respect to going to and finishing college.

Hey, nobody 'round here bats 1.000 ... 'cept me, of course.

I do think @Alma frequently is off-base in his criticisms of the higher education complex, but not in the way you might think. He rightly, in my view, is skeptical of the view that the professoriate should be so research-oriented (even though I had my time of being heavily into research). He's wrong, however, in his belief that the professoriate is so research-oriented: The vast, vast, vast majority of credit hours are earned under the supervision of people who've never published a damn thing (or secured the first grant dollar) or been interested in doing so.

Similarly, these frills that turn him off ... they should be a turn-off. But they're not ubiquitous. They're not even common. They're just noticeable because they pop up at places that are already pretty high-profile.

I have no idea if it’s “more” that or if it’s mostly that the wealthiest Americans who live the longest also happen to go to college. From my reading, and maybe I’m wrong, the study does not account for economic strata within the cohort.

But again…if all of what you wrote is true, then we’d be adding five years to the lives of millions of Americans if we just get them a college degree. How do we get that done?
