The column includes a reference to the Dodgers' remorse over their substandard vetting of Bauer. Does this mean every MLB team, as a matter of practice, vets every potential free agent's personal conduct to the point where they expect to uncover information beyond police reports? I'm really skeptical that such investigation exists.
I think everybody has known for years that Trevor Bauer is a jerk. I certainly wouldn't want my team to sign him. But what should we expect our teams to unearth in performing due diligence? I don't really know. Would welcome some insight here.

Without proclaiming any special expertise, people who enjoy BDSM practices often walk the borderline between sexual violence and roleplaying it. There are people of both sexes who enjoy rape fantasy, or some pain/pleasure inflicted or taken, be it spanking, choking, or playing reluctant while being dominated. Those are games that require trust, though. The person taking it needs to feel safe putting themselves under the control of their partner. Most people are not interested in being actually raped or whipped so much as in acting it out, pushing the limits, getting into a mental head space that simulates it while being able to stop the train literally with a word. I suspect that there are a lot of people who fantasize about that sort of thing when they masturbate but have never taken it to the real world.

Bauer strikes me as someone who has watched too much violent porn and wants to act it out. It's one thing to do that with a porn actor who is bent that way or is willing to take it for enough money. It's quite another thing to expect to be able to do it with a random civilian, even if she professes to be willing. If he pushed her to her limits and refused to stop, well, that's when it becomes sexual assault, and given the sort of rough sex that he seems to want, it means that he *starts* with serious charges and the longer he continues and the more he does, the more serious those charges become.

As to a club doing due diligence, I can't see how this sort of thing even gets discussed unless the player has a documented history. Once it gets into court issues like restraining orders and charges, even if they are made and later dropped, that should be a red flag, whether it involves more run of the mill domestic violence like striking a partner or allegations of sexual assault - and the more severe the charges the longer the club should investigate to be sure of what they're signing up into their locker room. I mean, sure the club could ask "Given what went on with the Dodgers and Trevor Bauer, we have to ask. Are you involved in any sexual practices that could put you at risk of blackmail or exposure in court?" They could ask, but they could also get told "None of your damn business what my sexual preferences are" or simply get lied to.

This is why I never got sexting, even when it’s not connected to accused crimes or misdeeds. Why would you ever want to put into writing all the stupid things people say while in flagrante delicto. Imagine seeing a quote sheet of all the intensely stupid things you’ve said while fucking? Then imagine them being read in court. It’d make you want to bury yourself in a 12-foot hole.

I've read nothing about Dodger remorse. The article says They blame themselves for not properly vetting Bauer but there are no quotes, no attribution. In fact, the dodgers have said nothing.

Trevor Bauer has settled his lawsuit with his accuser. The settlement, according to Bauer, had neither side paying the other any money and Bauer retaining his right to speak publicly about the case — which he does here, with some evidence of his innocence.

An attorney for the woman said she did not pay “a single dollar” to Bauer but received $300,000 from her insurance company.

What insurance policy would this be?

This video is odd. It starts while he’s in mid-diatribe. It is short on explanations and specifics.
Am I right in thinking this is an odd settlement because it obviously does not prevent either party from discussing the matter or disparaging the other?

Dollar amounts can get surprisingly high in personal injury cases. Insurance companies will often settle for more than seems reasonable just to make it go away.

It says "her" insurance company. That would indicate a company she hired, not one hired by someone else to mitigate a possible damaging judgment.

This settlement seems odd in a lot of respects.
