Not really. @Alma works with a "College" gestalt that's perfectly fine ... for a portion of those pursuing higher education. But there are a lot more other gestalts.

If you don’t think it’s hard for poor kids to fit in at college - regardless of how smart they are - because they lack money, OK.

I’m making a straight-up, left-wing argument about wealth…and because it violates, I dunno, some cherished idea about what you think college is or does, I’m a prude.

A person literally defended a taxpayer-funded school buying a monastery for rich kids’ study abroad program. That’s how entrenched the idea is

My point goes way beyond college. You’re a dick to anyone under 50 who might be enjoying themselves with anything that costs a dollar.

Poor kids have trouble fitting in at college.

And a kid raised in the church has trouble fitting in a dive bar for the first time.

And a child often has trouble fitting in their first day at kindergarten.

I went from working in a newspaper office to an assembly line.

We are required in life to go into difficult situations and adjust. If you carry that trauma for 40 years, go talk to a therapist. Don’t blame college.

Way beyond college? What the hell have I opined about?

Beyond this thread? Lots and lots. But at this point it’s less to do with that and more me going over the top with someone I don’t mesh well with and taking it too far to a dumb and gross place on a subpar day. Skip it. I got out of line.

To be clear - I think fewer people going to college, including fewer poor kids going there, would probably be a good thing. You just don't need it for a lot of jobs - you can sell insurance without going to the "College of Business" - and, again, I think it is in many ways closer to a finishing environment for wealthy people.

But if we're going to uphold the virtue of it to such a degree, I think college - at state schools - should be stripped down for the sake of utility and effectiveness.
