When I was a freshman, my girlfriend was in a standard triple dorm and both of her roommates moved out within the first few weeks and for some reason, she never got new ones.

So we took all three beds and put them together and lived large for the entire year. The only downside was I had to either go back to my dorm to shower or sneak into the women’s bathroom on her floor.

But other than that, best year of my life.

The UConn I left in 1998 after I graduated (with one women’s championship and a handful of field hockey and men’s soccer NCAA titles) looks markedly different today, and it ain’t because of the research they’ve done in MSB (Math-Science Building).

My nephew is a freshman there and he lives in a dorm complex that for decades (going back to the 50s) was called the Jungle. Now it’s just called “North Campus” and he said it’s quiet every night. Mind-boggling.

of course, those students who gave the Jungle its name probably wouldn’t be able to afford it now or have the grades to get in …

In CT, there is also free community college if you are receiving FAFSA. I'm going to strongly encourage my kids to go the community college route and then transfer.

Yes, and not only that, you can go part-time and it’s still free. And you don’t immediately have to go to community college from high school. It’s quite the change from when I was in college, where CC was for the kids who couldn’t hack it at a “real” university.

I teach college essays to my seniors to start off every year and guidance comes to give an hour-long talk about the application process. CC is such a gift now to not have to pay for the core classes.

He's at ASU. He was amused to learn he is apparently in the same dorm that James Harden lived in.

My son probably took about 10 credit hours at the local CC while enrolled at Microville Tech, and he got those credits for free because my spouse worked at the CC. Easy bike ride to the Microville branch, smaller classes, paying $0 per credit hour instead of $300.

Over the 20 years I was at the university from which I recently retired, it was astounding how much the staffs of the deans (and higher) expanded. Where once there was a dean, an associate dean and an assistant dean, there's now a dean, five associate deans and half a dozen "directors" of this and that. And the ... shudder ... "College of Business" enrollment grew maybe 10% to 15% over that timeframe.

And that's penny ante stuff compared to what's happened with the "Office of the Provost".
