The Bears' jersies at that time had larger numbers on the front than the back. So did the AFL Chargers for a couple seasons. I'm sure TV kiboshed that particular fashion trend.

Most people's favorite memory of Dick Butkus was as a football player But mine were the three seasons he played Coach Mile Katowinski on Hang Time A staple of my Saturday mornings in the 90s

Did Ted Stepien own an NFL team in the 1960s?

I never met Butkus, but once in a press box I did meet Conrad Dobler.

I looked up the details. During the 1964 draft, the Bears traded picks in the second and fourth round to the Steelers in exchange for Pittsburgh's first-round pick in 1965, which ended up being the No. 3 overall pick. That was the one they used on Butkus. The other first-round pick came in a trade with Washington. It should be no surprise that the Steelers were victimized in that deal. They had a long history of losing driven by a series of colossally stupid decisions until the '70s. This is the organization that cut Johnny United and Len Dawson.

So he was drafted by two teams the same year? I thought the AFL was offering big bucks to get some name players. Wonder how much the Broncos offered?

Maybe some Coors. The AFL Broncos were an absolute crap show. Cheap, never had a winning season, the butt of every joke.

Much like today, minus the cheap.

When Dobler died I bought a signed copy of "They Call Me Dirty" off eBay. Was there a definitive Butkus bio?
