Never underestimate man’s ability to be cruel.

And to find new technologies to kill.

 

Existential questions aside, it's absolutely fair as a practical matter to ask how this happened.

Israel is a nation built almost entirely around the practice and principle of its self-defense; around a military in which nearly every citizen participates; and around its constant state of readiness.

As was the case with 9 / 11, it's hard to imagine the breadth and depth of the military, political and intelligence failure here.

 

Much more importantly, what can be done about it?
