Yes, but this is an exercise in finding a relatively unsmelly turd in the bowl. Best that can be hoped for.

Yeah, but they've smelled like hot, stagnant untreated sewage for so long that our noses have a hard time discerning odors by now.

No coincidence that all three are from not too far apart. But of course, Sampson County says hold my beer.

McHenry is very right wing. But the thinking is he'd be willing to accept the fact he can't serve as Speaker, pro tem or otherwise, without some Democratic votes. Those votes won't come for free. Jordan, Scalese et. al. have rejected that option. It's pretty obvious that the no votes on Jordan could live with him ideologically, they just can't stand working with such an enormous asshole.

Easy on Sampson County. Good place ... accepted me as I staffed a lot of sports events there, and even after acknowledging that we don't sound alike.

And you really haven't lived until you've written a story with the dateline "Spivey's Corner" for your clip file.

Couldn’t it theoretically be accomplished with enough Democrats voting “present” once the GOP lands on a semi-tolerable alternative?

That requires Democratic consent to vote "present" instead of for Jeffries as they have unanimously done so far.

Well yes, there’s the entire Chutes & Ladders board to navigate before getting there. But increasingly that looks like the end square.

Yes, but my point stands. It requires Democratic cooperation to make McHenry Speaker for the rest of this Congress, no matter what procedure is used. And that in turn requires at least some Republican members to tolerate such cooperation and the price at which it is obtained. It's just as possible Jordan keeps hammering away vote after vote in the well-founded hope his GOP opposition gives up from exhaustion.

This will end like countless Friday night family car rides across America. Everybody will wind up at a restaurant nobody really wanted in the first place after driving around town in circles arguing whose turn it is to pick.
