The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has announced the eight-person ballot that will be considered by its Contemporary Baseball Era Committee for Managers/Executives/Umpires for Hall of Fame election for the Class of 2024.

I'd vote Leyland and Bill White. And Joe West? Being mediocre for a long time doesn't make a Hall of Famer.

I just remember Joe West as a look-at-me umpire who wanted to upstage the players.

It is a fucking joke West made it to the ballot. I sure hope there's a handful of sane people on the committee.

As for everyone else, Sweet Lou missed by one vote in the most recent balloting. With just one pennant, I don't think he's as strong a candidate as Leyland, though Lou has more wins and a higher winning pct and made the LCS three times w/the Mariners. I can see a case for Lou...and if he gets in, I hope it's on this cycle b/c he's 80 and has looked much thinner than usual in recent pics. Hopefully that's just weight loss and he's OK.

Davey Johnson for sure. In 17 seasons, his teams on average finished in 1.9 place. He only finished lower than 2nd twice and won his division six times -- including with four of the five teams he managed. He won everywhere he went. For me, he's a shoo-in, even if he is under .500 in the postseason.

Leyland is above .500 in the postseason (but barely over .500 in regular season). But he's got 3 pennants to Johnson's 1 and they both have a chip. I'd be inclined to vote for Johnson, Leyland, Piniella and Bill White.

I don't know anything about Hank Peters, to hell with Joe West, and Gaston only managed for 12 years. Yes, he was the first Black manager to win a World Series, but his resume is still a little wanting; the Jays never finished higher than 3rd (and mostly finished 4th or 5th) in the last 7 years of his managing career.

White had his hands on everything and should also be an easy call.

Davey's such an interesting candidate. Only won the one pennant, but what an iconic pennant it was. He got to the LCS with his next two teams, and as is the case with Lou, I can see crediting him for continually navigating the marathon required to get to the LCS and not punishing him for not winning the infamously random short series. And he was the first manager to make the Nationals decent (hi @Moderator1!), and that was after more than a decade on the sidelines following his lone unsuccessful stint, the two-year stopover w/the Dodgers. I think his legacy suffers a bit b/c he wore out his welcome everywhere he went. but on the other hand he worked for some strange fucking people (Wilpon, Angelos, Marge). He was also at the forefront of the information revolution, though he was actually allowed to, you know, manage. I'd probably vote for him and he's another guy who's definitely been thru the ringer health-wise (had some serious stomach issues and was hospitalized w/COVID) so the sooner he can get in, the better.

As a Reds fan it would be wild to see two former managers get in. Lou of course is a legend and Davey deserved better but as mentioned idiot Marge didn't like him.

If Lou gets in can his plaque just be the base he tossed? Feels appropriate.

I can. He's borderline Hall of Very Good -- especially as an outfielder.
