I don't have any proof, but I'd bet Mullaney was the writer behind some things we liked on SNL, and we didn't even know it.

I could never understand why the best he could do for prime-time TV was a complete "Seinfeld" ripoff.

He’s not pretending to have grown up in a trailer park.

The closing segment of one of Mulaney’s specials is about his parents and Bill Clinton. He doesn’t hide that or that he went to private schools or Georgetown. What an odd criticism.

Vulture has a good Top 10 list of skits he wrote here. Stefon and Herb Welch are probably the most well-known. It is kind of odd that he never really had another starring vehicle after Mullaney - I'm sure Netflix has offered it to him, between that show for kids he did, his stand-up specials and being part of the Big Mouth writer's room.

He does seem to really enjoy doing guest spots in various shows. Loved seeing him in the star-studded "Fishes" episode of The Bear. "Are you asking if I have access to $500? Yes I do, I'm a 43-year-old man." "Whatever you do with that [money] is going to be very interesting to me. All I ask is that one of you has to get in touch with me weekly to talk about the inventory, what’s in the boxes, what’s not in them."

That entire episode was one of the highlights of the last decade of television.

It was considered to be a failure of epic proportions and it’s not like mainstream sitcoms are a growth industry. He probably makes enough from standup and stays in the public eye as a result of SNL and talk show appearances

Oh, it was horrendous. Shameful that Elliot Gould and Martin Short lent their talents to it.

SNL gets ripped, but I didn't realize how much I missed it until Heidi Gardner showed up - she's one of those people on the show who makes every sketch better because you never know what direction its going to take. Bowen Yang is the opposite, you know EXACTLY where the sketch is going when he shows up.

Yeah, cause I traffic in the normal. :D

I know he didn't Vanilla Ice his way to the top. But everything I've seen of the guy feels like he got all sorts of early breaks b/c he had Mom & Dad's money behind him while infinitely funnier people never got a break. I fully acknowledge I could be wrong and that I'm just looking for another reason not to like the guy. *Bart Simpson voice* Wouldn't be the first time!

I definitely think you're wrong about a bunch of people being infinitely funnier than him. He's right up there, stand-up and overall comedy writing. Not the best actor, but he plays a mean George St. Geegland. You fucking dickhead.

As far as privilege goes, meh. The money helped, but his talent got him to SNL. It's not like he's Gwyneth Paltrow denying being a nepo baby.
