I'd like it to be "Witch Doctor" by the great Dave Seville (a.k.a. Ross Bagdasarian), but I'm wondering if maybe it wasn't a rock and roll song at all. Say, something from Nat King Cole or Sinatra or Perry Como or someone like that.

    You’re getting warmer.

Another hint: The singer had a bunch of other other Billboard Hot 100 hits, with his final one reaching the top 10 in 1972.

One final hint before I name the song: Its singer first became a star on TV.

Ricky Nelson? I don’t know the song but I’m guessing the 1972 one could be Garden Party

If it’s Nelson, maybe “Be-Bop Baby?”

Yes. Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool” was the first Billboard Hot 100 chart topper, on Aug. 4, 1958.

I feel deceived. You by implication lumped Ricky Nelson with Sinatra and Perry Como? Not only was Ricky definitely rock and roll, he's n the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Anyway, after my Pat Boone guess, I looked this up and discovered another good one.

What was the second Billboard Hot 100 No. 1?

Hint: It was the No. 1 song for the entire year of 1958.

Hint hint: It was definitely NOT a rock and roll record.

It also occurs to me that no one attempted to answer this one, which makes me sad.

    I’ll guess The Beach Boys.

    Surfin’ USA?”

    I
i will guess “Be My Baby” by The Ronnettes

And apologies if my hint was a bad one. Ken Jennings I’m not!
