I'm sure I'm pissing into the wind, but Ol Roy reported concerns about players in the African and Afro-American Studies program up his chain of command early in his tenure in Chapel Hill. When he arrived, almost all the players were AFAM majors. Since it isn't the basketball coach's place to question an academic department, he did the only thing a coach really can do, which is asked the basketball team's academic advisor to steer players away from the AFAM department. It's been a long time since I last read the Wainstein report, but my recollection was the '05 title team had something like 8 AFAM majors (and that title should've been voluntarily vacated given Rashad McCants admissions, imo) and the '09 title team had none. The scandal first broke in 2010. There's a lot you can criticize Williams for, but I'm not sure any coach could've handled that situation better.

If Woodson sticks around more than a couple more years, I think you've got a decent chance of getting one. 1987 was a long time ago.

This is what I get for typing while watching baseball and using the a/t wins list at College Basketball Reference, which only has Wooden at 664 wins. He also had Sam Gilbert, so...

Memorial Stadium holds 52,000. That might do it.

And it might be full for once, and not because Ohio State is in town.

The CFO of the company where I work has been friends with Knight for years. I remember him saying at least a couple of years ago that Knight was in bad shape and dealing with some form of dementia.

At 65, Woodson is basically there for the rest of his career, right? I only know of him vaguely from afar but he doesn't seem to be the guy biding his time for one more big shot in the NBA.

    Helluva thread. Thanks for sharing.

It was pretty well known in IU circles that Knight was in declining health and had dementia. It’s the reason he was moved back to Bloomington. Familiar place and people.

One of my grandmothers had Alzheimer’s. Very similar to that Knight story. She was in a place for a very long time that she thought my dad was in college.

It’s a hideous disease. Probably my biggest health fear.

I mean, he ran off Larry Bird, so take that graduation rate and stick it.

Kent Benson apparently played a pretty big role in that too.
