What I don't understand - and maybe these are the unspoken rules of this thread and this board that I missed - is that if anyone criticizes the Democrats or the left, it is automatically assumed to be an ignorance of the Republicans or the right.

By saying the Democratic Party - once the party of liberalism and, frankly, libertinism, the live-and-let-live party - has become more pious and ideologically rigid, tilting toward the hard progressive left, is not to say the GOP/right lacks its own purity tests.

I'm critiquing the left in part because the right is pretty awful, and would more likely change (in good ways) if the harder left loosened up a little bit.

Exactly. All the right needs to say is, "At least we don't believe there are 47 genders,'' and those reprobates get to play the normal guys in the room.

The Speaker of the House asks his son what porn he watched and compares notes.

And this is why the country elected Trump in 2016 and may do it again, taking democracy down in the process. This very attitude. The one that says, “The Left is to blame for the GOP’s willingness to exalt Trump.” The one that says, “I can’t vote for Democrats — even if my refusal returns a traitor to power.”
At some point, all Americans with a conscience have an obligation to stop Trump. Suck it up. Temporarily abandon your political leanings. Yes, you have to do it again. Because your preferred political party refuses to reject him.

OK, about that democracy thingy. Do you think Democratic voters --- the people --- want Biden to run for a second term? Do you think they want Harris as their nominee if something should happen to him? Do you think Biden would win a primary (an honest primary where other candidates aren't worried about stepping on established norms), with or without James Clyburn's help?

But they don't get to make those choices. Because protocol. Protocol that removes their voice and may send Trump back to the White House.

what does this mean? That he’ll try to run for a third term? That it’ll become a theocracy?

My life is in no way affected by CRT, 47 genders, or which bathroom maybe the two or three trans students in my county use. That’s all horseshit culture war nonsense.

The GOP is completely disconnected from reality, and they would rather burn this country down than give an inch.

We have real problems which demand real thinking by serious people. There’s literally no Republicans running for office who fit the bill, because they’ve all been denounced as RINOs.

For some reason, it's different when Trump does it. People don't seem to mind. In fact, they support him. No matter what he says or does.

I don't know how anyone -- anyone -- could be supporting Trump at this point. And yet, he supposedly leads Biden in the battleground states. We are still having to listen to and contend with him, and he is not in jail yet, seemingly no matter what he has done, threatened to do, or claimed to do. He's not professional, or Presidential, and never will be, and yet...It's unbelievable -- unfathomable -- how stupid, ignorant and uncaring people can be, and just as much so that Trump very well could actually become President again. And yet...

This age thing is a really serious factor when it comes to Biden. Not only Fox News has latched onto it. So have a lot of voters, and the Democratic party really ought to be more worried about it than seems apparent. A contingency plan, another candidate -- one who could beat Trump -- should be under consideration.

Trump must not win, either a primary, or the Presidency. And, while I will vote for Biden until the cows come home if it would prevent that, I would rather see another candidate besides Biden allowed, and put up, as an option. And yes, Newsom would be good.

The idea that no one should step on an incumbent President's toes if he wants to run for re-election will be a poor reason for Trump, somehow, finding his way into the White House again.

He has said as much. He has said he’ll pursue another term because the election was stolen in 2020. He has said his immigration policies will keep out people who don’t believe in “our religion.” And he has pledged to punish his enemies.
His klan has refused to repudiate him. The Speaker of the House, who thinks the planet is 6,000 years old, has said he’s not committed to democracy because the country’s form of government is not a democracy.
It’s not so hard to believe they’ll have the numbers to call a constitutional convention.

I don't think Joe Biden is anything close to "hard progressive left."
