This week's bizarre high school football score

The local high school started its season 1-5, and we were just assuming that that was how the season was going to go, and that was fine by us, because we're really involved with marching band, so the earlier football ends, the earlier we're done.

Then halfway through the season, the head football coach was placed on administrative leave, then resigned a week later. Supposedly, he and a volleyball coach - both married to other people - were caught by a janitor gettin' it on in a classroom. With an interim head coach, the team has won every game since and beat a previously undefeated team last night by 24 points and won the district championship.

The good news is that the first playoff game is at our stadium, so we're not responsible for getting meals together for 200 band members to eat on the bus as they head to another road game.

 

Guess the guy didn't have time to study their opponents' game tape ...

We had a game here Friday night: defending state champions led a team that has a long losing streak 44-0 after the first quarter. It was 64-0 at halftime, then finished 77-0 after only 2 second-half touchdowns. The reward for the winners? I haven't seen the pairings, but they could play a team that lost 84-0 on the same night.

 

Replying to my own message, the 77-0 winner does play the 84-0 loser in the first round of the playoffs. The only alternative, had the points worked out, was a rematch of the 77-0 ass whipping. Too damn many teams in the playoffs.

 

Yes, I guess you are aware by now that in Virginia's Class 1 an 0-10 team made the playoffs. I've heard of 1-9 teams making the playoffs but not sure if an 0-10 has made it?

 

Ohio expanded its playoffs. 448 of its 701 football playing schools, or 69%, make the postseason. It's a pretty hot debate every year.
Four 1-win teams made it this year.

 

In the private school association that includes schools in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee, there was an 0-11 team that made the Class 1A playoffs this year — over a couple of teams with one and two wins.
The MAIS uses a power points system that has a strength of schedule component. This particular team got beat by some of the best teams around, which apparently shot its strength of schedule through the roof despite not scoring more than 12 points in any of its last five regular-season games. Twelve of the 15 teams in that classification qualify for the playoffs (three district champs and nine wild cards based off of power points), so this one wound up getting the honor of being the No. 12 seed. They lost 68-26 in the first round.

 

In the Virginia public schools system, 190 teams have made the regional playoffs

One year in Texas, an 0-10 team (Houston Scarborough) made the playoffs because two teams in their district were ineligible.

They finished 0-11.
