I would suggest to Ms. Thompson an alternative if you don't get to talk to the coach after halftime—tell your producer and they can skip that segment. Absolutely no one will miss it.

Absolutely nobody would miss sideline reporters if they didn't exist. Nobody.

Joseph Mitchell doesn't see what the big deal is.

Correct, but not the point here. Imagine if a scribe couldn't get a coach on tight deadline and just made it up. Even a quote that "can't be argued with" like the stuff she made up. This shit soils the whole business, including those of us not attractive and on teevee.

That she would even admit to this would make her hero on that side of the fence.

Doesn't that kind of make everything she says now questionable? Certainly if you don't get to the coach or he gives you nothing, you can do an injury update, or something. Really a bad look. This is something I'd expect from Lisa Guerrero, not Thompson. Also surprised because sideliners usually have an on-field producer with them.

I want to pile on here, because she's dumb as the day is long, but I can't muster up the energy. Who gives a shit? Sideline reporters are beyond useless and most of them are there only b/c someone decided eye candy on the sideline would boost ratings (I can't imagine it has). Not coincidentally, there is almost zero actual news value in any of these reports outside of maybe reporting what we can already see from our living rooms (Player X is in the tent, no shit). I have no idea what kind of prep sideline reporters do, but none of it matters b/c the coaches offer nothing of substance at any point so there's nothing to augment. I feel bad for sideline reporters w/real chops like Pam Oliver & Lisa Walters, who did a tremendous job during the awful Damar Hamlin incident last year. But otherwise, meh, who cares. The best thing that could come out of this is getting rid of sideline reporters entirely.

But we're able to muster up the energy for "who gives a shit?" On the topic of making up interviews?

See, I kinda think it's precisely the people like Thompson who do stuff like this. Obviously she didn't do anything anywhere near what Glass and Blair did, but they were sharp, too. Often, liars are folks who think they're smart enough to bullshit their way through stuff. Often they do.
