The problem is many of the people Trump and the MAGAites and BTE want to kick out are people fleeing from really shitty situations and are trying to play by the rules but the finish line keeps moving. It's the asylum seekers that are getting screwed here. We have laws that allow them to come and laws that should protect them. Instead, they get dumped in cages and forced to fester on the Mexican side of the border where gangs and cartels prey on them. We're not perfect when it comes to handling undocumented peoples, but that is not where the deplorables are starting.

The trumplicans don’t WANT a solution on immigration. They want the issue. Now that they’ve lost abortion as a wedge, it’s one of the few things they have left outside of bullshit culture war garbage.

Exactly. And the unmitigated flustercluck that the family separations at the border should be a cautionary tale.

Fuck Trump, and fuck anyone who in any way defends any of his policies. They all come down to: keep me in office, good. Even if it involves some South American strongman shit.

The real answer to "how is this going to affect me" is not some talk about racism or taxes or high-minded things. It's the survival of our democracy. If you're cool living under a dictatorship or being ruled by oligarchs, then this won't affect you. The rest of us, however, don't want to live in a dictatorship and don't want a guy like Putin running the show for a select few. We fought fascism and won (and F U if you put in bUt ThE sOvIeTs. The Soviets didn't liberate Italy, North Africa and sure as fuck didn't keep the Japanese busy for three years leading to Germany collapsing in 1945). We won the ideological fight over Communism. We are a republic and the standard barrier for democracy. And F U if think any of that won't affect you because that means you are the people putting anti-Americans in power.

Sure do. Congress needs to pass some smart laws and fix immigration.

I wonder how long it has been since something as clearly needed as this was done?

I think you can assume that the National Milk Producers Federation is among the most socially conservative groups in the country. Yet, here's what they have to say about immigrant labor:
"Immigrant labor accounts for 51 percent of all dairy labor, and dairies that employ immigrant labor produce 79 percent of the U.S. milk supply. If the U.S. dairy industry lost its foreign-born workforce, it would nearly double retail milk prices and cost the total U.S. economy more than $32 billion."
Also, I think you can assume that immigrants do the shttiest, most dangerous jobs on an industrial-scale dairy farm.
"Since 2009, at least 17 workers, most of them immigrants, have died on Wisconsin dairy farms. Twelve of the deaths happened on farms with fewer than 11 workers. OSHA did not inspect eight of those 12, each time citing the small farms exemption." From ProPublica, Oct. 25.
That's just the dairy industry. Do your own research regarding poultry/egg farms, slaughterhouses, etc. The ironic thing is that NAFTA sent loads of cheap farm products to poorer countries in the Western Hemisphere, literally driving farmers there out of business and forcing them to become migrants.

We so regularly cause our own problems and point the finger elsewhere.

Alabama passed a truly draconian immigrant law about a decade ago and damn near shut down Tyson Chicken. As recently happened in Florida, the law passed and the workers fled the state.

That's because they pay them shit wages. Below any reasonable standard of American living.

Do we want - need - cheap milk in that context?
