if 'wrong' is made 'right' by the conviction that a divine edict is being followed, religion intrudes on politics in a unique way.

It turns wrong into right as if turning water into wine.

Whether or not that unique intrusion results in unique political outcomes - outcomes other than those one might expect from an atheist or an agnostic or a Democrat - I cannot say.

    Two things.

You implicitly argue that any view supported by a religious belief is dangerously close to becoming in fact law just by the assertion of the belief. Which is false.

Second, you fail to distinguish who a religious belief is somehow different than any other belief or -ism people hold. Communists believe the means of production should be collectively owned. How does that differ from religious belief? It takes almost the same amount of faith that it is true.

'Wrong' is made 'right' by all sorts of acts of faith. Any number of the most shameful chapters in the history of these here United States involve awful things being washed in the blood of "democratic processes" (to quote a former foil of mine).

Consider two sets of policies -- rent control and anti-gouging laws -- that enjoy the Good Housekeeping Seal of majority support (particularly in certain locales). Both theory and evidence run strongly counter to these: They almost certainly harm those they purport to help. And yet there they sit, grounded on nothing other than some collective "ick" that's no more rational than the Doctrine of Transubstantiation.

All of this is to say that, from where I sit, a political value resting on religious concerns isn't especially concerning, particularly when you consider the track record of those animated by "majority support."

Give me back my trophy wife
My gilded room, my tacky life
    It's busy here
    There's many left to torture
    Give me absolute control
    Over every living soul
    And kneel before me, baby
    That's an order

Give me rubles and Bud Light
    Take all the Adderall left
And stuff it up the hole
    In your nose
Give me back the Mexican wall
Give me Ted Cruz and Rand Paul
    I've seen the future, brother
    It is murder

Things are going to fall, fall in all directions
Won't be nothing (won't be nothing)
    Nothing you can measure anymore
The con man, the con man of the world
    Has crossed the threshold
    And he's overturned
    The order of the soul

When they said (they said) covfefe (covfefe) covfefe (covfefe)
It didn't make sense to me
When they said (they said) covfefe (covfefe) covfefe (covfefe)
It didn't make sense to me

    You didn't think he'd win
You never will, you never did
    He's the jumbo prick
    Who held the Bible
I've seen the nations rise and fall
I've heard their stories, heard them all
But fascism's the only engine of survival
Your servant here, he has been told
To say it clear, to say it cold
    It's over, it ain't going
    Any further (coup, coup, coup)
And now the wheels of commerce stop
You can feel the hand of the cop
    Get ready for the future
It is murder (coup, coup, coup)

I think it’s generally accepted that if a decent number of college kids get out and vote, trump has no chance. But will a decent amount get out? Maybe, like other recent elections, abortion will influence them to go vote.

How do rent control and laws regulating price-gouging harm those they seem to support?
