And then most of the teams just piss away that opening even if they picked the right guy. If my quick scan of Pro Football Reference is accurate, only the Chiefs (Patrick Mahomes), Bengals (Joe Burrow) and Ravens (Joe Flacco) have made a Super Bowl with a first-round QB on his rookie deal since 2008. I think the only QBs on a rookie deal to win at least two playoff games in two different seasons are Mahomes, Flacco and fucking Mark Sanchez LOL.

The Falcons, Panthers & Ravens each won one playoff game during the rookie deals for Matt Ryan, Cam Newton & Lamar Jackson. The Texans won one playoff game w/garbage human Deshaun Watson. The Colts won three playoff games during Andrew Luck's first deal, and of course let him take such a ruthless beating that he retired just before turning 30. The Bills won two playoff games in Josh Allen's third year, as many as they've won since then. The Cardinals didn't win a playoff game on Kyler Murray's rookie deal and the Chargers almost certainly aren't going to win one on Justin Herbert's rookie deal (or ever). The only recent first-rounders with a chance at making a deep playoff run on his first deal are Trevor Lawrence and maybe C.J. Stroud.

And if you ever want to see a depressing list of suck...check out some of the first-round QBs since 2005. Yikes.

That's what happens when rookie QBs start. It's a failure factory.

Even with the ticking clock on the rookie deal, it's never made sense to me to not have the rookie QB sit most or all of his rookie year. Worked out well for Mahomes, Eli Manning and Steve McNair, who sat out most of his first two years. If the guy is even mediocre (see Jones comma Daniel), the team is gonna commit Monopoly money to him. So why ruin him in year one?

... or get him killed behind a crappy offensive line with nothing more than a dependable slot receiver to keep your offense going?

Didn't the Seahawks go to their two Super Bowls when Russell Wilson was still on his rookie deal? Thought that was part of what they said helped them assemble a great defense, was that they didn't have to pay him until after the second Super Bowl.

I forgot that he was actually a big part of the Browns building the big lead that day. He caught six passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. The second one gave Cleveland a 24-7 lead in the third quarter.

Ahh crap, that's what I get for only filtering first-round picks. Wilson was a third-rounder but they of course won it all in year three, I believe. Here's to you, Matt Flynn!

Jalen Hurts (second rounder) was also still on his when the Eagles got there last year. He didn't get paid until this past offseason.

There's also Brock Purdy, of course, although that's an odd situation.

This sort of ties together with the rookie QB tangent: It's not a coincidence the Seahawks, Eagles & 49ers have been among the better run teams for a decade-plus while so many teams trip over own dicks and fuck up a first-round QB.

Colin Kaepernick was a rookie deal. The new guy's salary helps eating all the other QBs costs.
