I am also a progressive and a Methodist. Hedley Lamarr ought to recruit this board. Anyway, went home last weekend and went to my parents' church (and by extension, the one I was raised in). They had a vote to disassociate from the UMC that fell one vote short of the required two-thirds, and so large portion of an already aging church in an already aging community just walked out. It was quite sad.

You are confusing a person's personal beliefs with the expression of one's beliefs in political decision making. In politics, you don't have to change another person's mind, you have to get more votes than the other person's side.
