Oh for heaven's sake ... name a high-profile defendant for whom delay and appeal aren't guaranteed.

The argument that a trial is going to be interfering with a presidential election is surely a novel one, no?

Sure, but there are myriad other arguments for the delaying of the skinning of that cat.

There are many judges who won’t abide by delays even in multi defendant cases who now have to think twice about timing.

Good for them. The point to which I responded was that "it's Trump yada yada."

How many defendants of your familiarity are anxious to "get on with it"?

And how many defendants of your familiarity, upon conviction, say, "ah the hell with it ... forget appealing"?

He is a unique defendant who is using the 2024 election as a delay tactic. Which is particularly important because he will pardon himself if he wins.

At least he can't pardon himself in New York or Georgia.

Not that he'll ever spend a day inside prison. He should've been led out of the White House in handcuffs on 1/7.

If he returns to office, he'll use military force to eliminate any legal actions taken against him by any state, on the grounds those states would be interfering with his performance of his duties as commander in chief. (He'll cite the Civil War as precedent.)

That'll probably start with an absolute cutoff of all federal funds to the state in question (or its citizens) but it won't take long before tanks are rolling up to the state capitol.

Your belief that the military, en masse, would turn on US citizens is … a thing.

It wouldn't have to be en masse; certain selected units would be enough.

It's certainly nice to believe "it can't happen here."

The UCMJ forbids the military from following an unlawful order. Any commander who follows Trump's martial law order in 2025 will be looking at hard time in Leavenworth the second Emperor Twitchy keels over, which is sooner than you think.
