If I was related to any of the still-held hostages, hearing that would scare me.

 

The resolution makes no mention of Hamas, whose militants killed about 1,200 people and abducted about 240 in the surprise attack inside Israel on Oct. 7 that set off the war.

One amendment proposed by the United States would have added a paragraph stating that the assembly “unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas.”

A second amendment proposed by Austria would have added that the hostages are “held by Hamas and other groups” and should be released “immediately.”

Both amendments were voted down.

 

Not at all. It was saying that politicians in Israel have told public that they were going to eliminate Hamas, return all the hostages, rebuild the border communities and remove the security threat. And it's clear that most of that isn't going to happen easily at least, and certainly not in the few week window of opportunity when there was unity.

The article was pointing that out.

There was a divide in Israel before October 7. You were seeing massive protests over Netanyahu's overhaul of the judicial system and politically there is no unity there. But no country mobilizes and finds a common voice in the face of a threat like Israel. You had all of the reservists immediately report to fight, and everyone got on the same page in the wake of the attack.

That bought Israel a period of unity. ... but. ... America, which Israel needs for military support, has been ratcheting up pressure slowly. ... and we have the resolve of tired hyenas. Add to it how badly Israel's economy is getting crushed, and the huge burden the war is for the reservists, which is exacting a toll.

The article was pointing out that there isn't going to be a quick eradication of Hamas, and the hostages might languish, and as time goes on the public is likely to get more and more frustrated by the failure to achieve the goals that the politicians have been promising.
