Embattled Florida GOP chair demands buyout to quit, party members say

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/12/14/christian-ziegler-florida-republican-chair/

"Republican leaders in Florida are expressing outrage over a reported proposal that party chairman Christian Ziegler be paid as much as $2 million before he’ll step down amid a sexual assault investigation.

Ziegler is battling to keep his powerful position despite dual scandals, one of which has also ensnared his wife, Bridget Ziegler, a Moms for Liberty co-founder who sits on the Sarasota County School Board.

The couple, whose political influence has grown along with the ascent of the Florida GOP, have been asked to quit their jobs, even by friends and allies as well as political opponents. Each has refused.

Party members say a buyout for Christian was floated more than a week ago. Florida Politics first reported on it Thursday, saying the demand may have been as high as $2 million.

Ziegler, in reply to a text message, said the buyout report was “100% not true.”

Apparently there is no mechanism in the bylaws of the Florida GOP to fire the chairman, and Ziegler is asking to be paid to go away.

Former McCarthy staffer and current Assemblyman from Bakersfield initially said he was not going to run for the seat his former boss was vacating. Then—thanks to the filing period being extended because the incumbent was not going to run again—he changes his mind and files to run for the seat. One problem: He has already filed to seek reelection. And since the filing deadline has passed for his seat, he can’t withdraw from running. So the state said he’s off the congressional ballot since you can’t run for two offices at once. Of course this will be settled in court.

Long story short, just like his former boss, he’s not great at understanding election law.
