    From the first day of practice, it was understood that if Alabama was going to win a natty the defense would have to be elite. And they couldn’t get the stop when it mattered in the fourth quarter and folded two plays into overtime. That’s more determinative than the fourth down call.

    As in most good football games, there were enough blunders on both sides to create goats if one wants to look for them. Heroes too, if you prefer to look that way.
