Monte had a local sports site he was running in (I think) South Carolina. Not sure what’s up with that now.

The NASCAR channel is mostly useless now. They’d be better off just running classic race broadcasts 12 hours a day.

He ran a website out of Laurens County for a while. I just looked, and can't locate it. He's still active on twitter, it seems.

Do callers and Dave Moody still yell at each other for a few hours every afternoon?

All of us were stuck in the media parking lot at Richmond late one night/early the next morning when Monte pulled out the guitar and gave us a one-hour impromptu concert to pass the time.

Almost as surprising as sitting next to David Poole at an Indianapolis Indians game and him actually having a good time.

    Re: Claire B.

I'm just wondering how much the next media rights package played into SXM's decision -- will they be paying more to stream MRN and PRN -- or whether that channel just hemorrhaged enough listeners to where she cost more to keep than to release. SXM charges a flat rate for the expanded package but I have no idea if any of the NASCAR shows are supported by advertising as well. I'm certain SXM monitors listenership via its radio IDs and moves channels to prime locations based on the numbers.

We all are replaceable. I just hate the way Claire got the news, plus the timing. And yeah, don't know if that means the other shows are getting axed, too. Many SXM channels only go live when there's an event. I don't think the IndyCar channel has programming other than race weekends.

    That's an excellent list.

Gerald Martin was very good. Larry Woody, too. Al Pearce comes to mind. Mike Harris (the AP one) has a ton of great stories over more than four decades at all the major events and was always amazingly approachable. (EDIT: How could I forget Shav Glick?)

Chris Economaki is pretty hard to beat for scope and sheer length of career. I only saw him at Pocono but he was exactly as I expected -- cranky and opinionated about everything and everyone -- including why all my questions had to do with NASCAR.

Multi ARCA Champ Tim Steele, never the same after a practice crash at Atlanta in 1997, died.

Another of those "what if?" stories had the HANS and SAFER been in place. So many drivers with serious brain injuries who survived the crash only to have their lives turned upside down.

3-Time ARCA Champion Tim Steele Dead at 55

I love the stuff, but that’s still funny enough to get a like.
