According to a tally maintained by the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 79 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the war on Oct. 7. Local Palestinian authorities put that number above 100. In either case, it’s the single biggest death toll for journalists in a conflict zone for years — surpassing the toll exacted on the press operating in Ukraine over the past two years in just a matter of months. By one estimate, 1 out of every 10 journalists in the Gaza Strip has already been killed.

Yeah, it would be nice if Israel stopped murdering journalists, wouldn't it?

Because that's what they're doing. They are committing mass murder of journalists then lying about it.

You'd think that would draw some pushback on a board for supposed journalists.

IIRC, Israel first said that there was a terrorist in the car who was targeting a drone. If one of the reporters was doing so instead, it could have been legitimate confusion.

OTOH, I have seen several reports that looked like deliberate targeting of reporters, especially if they worked for Arab outlets.

Hard to move people past anything more complicated than "Israel has the right to defend itself."

It is still unknown how effective the military assault has been at disabling Hamas, though Israeli officials claim to have dismantled its military capability in northern Gaza. Mr. Biden is right to press Israeli leaders on the steep human toll in any case. More than 22,000 Palestinians have died, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, a part of Gaza’s Hamas-controlled government that international groups nevertheless say has provided reasonable estimates in previous conflicts. About 85 percent of Gaza’s population has been displaced, concentrated in the south of the strip. Even with trucks bringing in supplies, the United Nations reports, hunger is now common.
