However over the top Rome could be, he was never as ridiculous as Cowherd. Rome could do good interviews. Not as funny, sharp or self aware as Scott Van Pelt, but listenable.

As a sports radio talk show host the two hours before Rome’s show (gosh, 23 years ago?), that was a trip.

“Dear Jim, I didn’t do anything to Nicole. I was hanging out with Pay. Dro. Goo. Rare. Oh.

    Signed, Orenthal.”

He has an interview podcast called The Reinvention Project that's pretty good. Wide spectrum of guests, not just sports.

"There will be a lot of people that will be happy with that, myself included" — WTF? You're the one paying him to come on weekly with his nutty observations.

This is how far the needle has moved; that Rome and Scott Ferrall were once considered "edgy" and now they're just a regular dudes compared to everyone else.

Last time I heard Ferrall he sounded like a middle aged loner whose main thing in life was bitching about sports instead of actually enjoying them. And the voice sounded as fake as anything. What a far cry from his days using a beer-being-pored FX in the background and talking like a stoned 1970s progressive rock DJ.

As a recently turned 21-year-old, I thought his show was the greatest thing ever, with the hard rock soundtrack underneath it all. Spring break 1999 I broke up with my girlfriend and, as I drove home from her house, turned on Ferrall on the Bench and thought, "well, I still have this at least."

Until four days later when he announced his show was leaving the air in Pittsburgh because the station had been acquired by ESPN Radio.

I saw that MCaffey won't have Rodgers on the rest of the season - isn't his show year-round? Or only a certain amount of months? I know a lot of talk shows take a summer break and come back with a "new season" after airing repeats for a few weeks. Hell, make AJ Hawk do something.
