I'm sure that a coach who was a player for Belichick, then a coach under Belichick, will now do things totally differently than Belichick. But IMO no coach who wasn't part of the Patriot Way in its glory days was going to be foolhardy enough to replace Belichick. By all accounts Mayo is both smart and a good guy. He's gonna need to be a really lucky guy as well. New England's needs on offense start with a new quarterback, no, two new quarterbacks, go on to replacing all the wide receivers as well as getting two new tackles. For dessert, find a new kicker. Quite a tall order for a franchise whose owner defines making the playoffs as a baseline D-plus for his coach.

Which new hire out there would even be allowed to shop for his own groceries, to use the Bill Parcells line? Maybe Harbaugh, but even then I’d be plenty nervous. I’m not sure we’ll see total control like that again for a good long while.

BYH is correct. Belichick's ego is massive, and he's not going to want to pass Shula's record while coaching for the Panthers or Saints.

It would be his third stint as Jets coach, and he hasn't coached a game for them.

"BYH is correct" is not a phrase you often hear.

You hear it more than "All these stupid consonants and one occasional vowel is correct!"
