It's not like their kids are smart enough or the parents wealthy enough to afford even state schools anymore. There is a reason they call Oregon, the University of North California now.

'Bama's student body is around 40% state resident. They made a conscious decision to expand the student body and emphasize taking non-residents for twice as much money because they're carrying a lot of construction debt. It's hard for a local kid to get in anymore.

People back east often don’t realize that getting into almost any UC system school is a whale of an accomplishment.

Yep. And they're all top-40 schools.

The UC system has been incredible for decades. I didn't come close to sniffing to getting accepted to them, thus I ended up at a Cal State school.

I got in after a two-year run at a local JC. It's a lot easier, and you get your basics out of the way. I remember people having to wait until they were seniors at Cal to finally get into an English 101 class so they could graduate.

If there's one thing that realignment does, I hope it's bringing us more Ole Miss vs. Tennessee games.

This still happens. When it got really bad about 10 years ago, the University of Oregon et al started getting a lot of Californians because Californians were discovering they had no margin for change in majors or anything in the UC System. Even if their grades were sufficient, they were having a hard time getting all their required courses in four years' time. That fifth year was costly. Going out of state and graduating in four years -- even with the higher annual cost -- was often cheaper than five years of in-state work for these students.

Back in the disco era, California junior colleges were free, so not only did you get all your general ed stuff done, you saved two years worth of tuition to boot. And had a better chance of getting into a UC school as a junior.
